Emperor Scorpion, Dierenpark Emmen, Netherlands – 1596

Emperor Scorpion, Dierenpark Emmen, Netherlands – 1596
In the Africa House in Emmen Zoo are several scary arthropod animals to see, including the emperor scorpions.
It is one of the largest scorpions in the world and that is why he got the name "emperor". Scorpions are poisonous, but the poison of the emperor scorpion is not as powerful.
This scorpion has big and strong claws to defuse its prey. Therefore he needs no strong poison.
The female emperor scorpion is a very caring mother. Newborn scorpions are stark and crawl immediately after birth on mother’s back.
If mom has got hold of the prey the babies eat a bite of it. This remains the case, till the young scorpions have become black too. Then they have to go catch their own prey.

This is what we saw during our Cycling holiday in Drenthe and Groningen, the Netherlands, where we have cycled through the beautiful landscape.
